Shruti Haasan’s Spiritual Journey: Finding Faith in an Unconventional Home

Shruti Haasan

Shruti Haasan, the talented actress and musician, recently opened up about a deeply personal aspect of her life—her faith. As the daughter of iconic actors Kamal Haasan and Sarika, Shruti's upbringing was anything but ordinary. However, what sets her apart is the unique path she chose towards spirituality, a path she discovered independently, without influence from her parents.

In an interview with Pinkvilla, Shruti reflected on the role faith plays in her life, describing it as a source of immense strength and guidance. “My faith in God is what has made me strong,” she said. Surprisingly, this spiritual foundation wasn’t laid at home. “My home was more of an atheist home. My mum is spiritual, but my dad never was. So, we didn’t grow up with the concept of God,” she explained. “I discovered it myself. I strongly believe in the power of God, and that belief has taken me through and to many important milestones in my life.”

A Household of Contrasts

Kamal Haasan, one of India’s most celebrated actors and filmmakers, is well-known for his rationalist and atheist beliefs. His ex-wife Sarika, while not overtly religious, leans towards spirituality. This blend of contrasting ideologies created an environment where Shruti and her sister, Akshara, were free to form their own worldviews.

Despite being raised in a liberal and open-minded environment, Shruti felt drawn towards spirituality from a young age. Her curiosity wasn’t sparked by family rituals or religious discussions at home but instead bloomed in the most unexpected ways—through her quiet observations of the world around her.

A Secret Spiritual Adventure

When Shruti was asked how she first encountered God, her response was refreshingly candid and humorous. “Chori chori (secretly),” she said with a smile.

She recalled fond childhood memories of riding her bicycle around her neighborhood. “There was this lane near our colony where I loved to cycle. I wasn’t allowed to go near the main gate, but every morning I’d hear the bells from both the temple and the church. I’d wonder which one I could reach first. Since the temple was farther away, I started visiting the church once a week,” she recounted.

For nearly six months, this routine remained her little secret. “No one at home knew about it. Kids are funny like that – the moment you tell them not to do something, they become even more curious. For me, that curiosity became a gateway to religion and faith.”

A Special Temple Visit with Grandfather

One of Shruti’s most cherished memories is her first visit to a temple, an experience that left a lasting impact on her spiritual journey. “The first time I went to a temple was with my grandfather. He took me to a beautiful temple in Chennai,” she said, her eyes lighting up as she recalled the experience.

However, this visit came with a small catch. “My grandfather told me not to tell my father about it,” she laughed. “It was our little secret.” Sadly, not long after that visit, her grandfather passed away.

That temple visit became more than just a childhood memory—it forged a spiritual connection that Shruti continues to hold dear. “I always felt a strong bond with my grandfather, and after he passed, visiting that temple felt like staying connected to him in some way. It became a spiritual space where I felt his presence.”

Walking Her Own Path

Shruti’s journey into faith stands out because it highlights the beauty of personal discovery. While many inherit religious practices from their families, Shruti’s beliefs were cultivated through personal exploration and introspection. Her story is a testament to the idea that spirituality doesn’t always follow tradition—it can grow organically, shaped by life experiences and individual connections.

In a world where celebrity lives are often defined by glitz and glamour, Shruti’s candid revelations about faith add a layer of relatability and depth to her persona. Her spiritual journey serves as a reminder that sometimes, the most profound connections to faith and belief come from within, nurtured quietly, away from the spotlight
